The changing stripes

He might be on the run and under terminal siege at home, but Veluppillai Prabakaran is having a good run in TN now. The sudden escalation of temperature on the Sri Lankan issue here is really a lifeline to one of the most wanted terrorists of our times. For if the TN blackmail of the Centre succeeds, VP will get a new lease of life. Of course, the people of the State are being fed the familiar alibi of solidarity with Sri Lankan Tamils. Well, of all the cries of woes coming across the Palk Straits, we all know which one is heard and heeded the most here!
After ensuring that no one else remained to fight for the Tamil cause, the supreme tiger has managed to pass muster under almost all the political skins in TN. To their credit, the MDMK and the PMK have never hidden their affinity to the LTTE. The two parties have been too vocal in their support, at times even warranting an extended ban. Thirumavalavan’s Viduthalai Chiruththaigal is extended family, as the name, intentionaly or inadvertently suggests. Its leaders are known to frequent Vavuniya till quite recently right under the noses of the authorities of the two nations. The DK and its breakaway factions have a known history of Tiger riding. Though his voice has been drowned by other megaphones this time, to Nedumaran, VP is the only Tamil that exists in Lanka. It is not difficult to guess where the sympathies of the fledgling DMDK of V’kanth lie; after all the origins of ‘Captain’ is tinsel legend.
No one knows the stand of the BJP. The AIADMK of course, has been steadfast in its opposition to the LTTE. The Left is a new entrant to the Eelam politics in TN. Actually it was the comrades who set the political ball rolling with a fast that eventually fizzled. That leaves the DMK and the Cong. While all the aforesaid outfits have been somewhat consistent in their behaviour, the DMK and Cong have made a virtue of contradictions. These two parties have played a variety of political games on the issue, at times at each other’s throat as antogonists, tangoing often as partners or simply engaging in friendly bouts while under one umbrella. From dare devilry to duplicity all tricks have been on parade. If the SL issue is now a diplomatic and emotional maze it is primarily due to the self-serving antics of these parties.
To the Cong first. To its prima donna specifically. If the LTTE today is less of a menace in the eyes of many, the credit must go in great measure to Sonia Gandhi. She has single handedly engineered a revival of its fortunes here and emboldened all the elements that have laid low for tactical or legal reasons after Rajiv’s death. Rajiv’s murder was a national calamity for it was a revenge killing for a decision he took as PM. It was also a personal tragedy, no doubt to his family and friends. But it was the Congress that mixed that personal grief with politics and made it a heady cocktail that caused cataclysmic convulsions in the nation and in TN.
The party brought down a government in 1997 because it could not support an alliance in which the DMK was a part. It is common knowledge that between 1991 to 1998, Sonia and family have on many occasions expressed displeasure at the tardy progress of investigations into Rajiv’s assassination, particulary w.r.t to DMK. She made a spirited defence of the Jain Commission and dubbed criticism of it as an attempt to divert the investigation. In a virtual direct attack on K, VP Singh and Chandra Shekhar, she said in Amethi in 1999: ‘There are some people in the political arena of the country who facilitated the murder of my husband’. And referring indirectly to G.K.Moopanar’s alliance with DMK, Sonia said:’There are people who are aligning with fans of my husband’s murderers due to the politics of power’. But soon, with the prospect of power blooming before her, the bloody clot thawed and the DMK became the most trusted soulmate. And worse, the PMK and MDMK are part of her bandwagon even without getting off their tiger-mounts! But if political pragmatism can provoke a personal leap of faith of this magnitude, does it not call for a special kind of mindset? But why bother! Dead men, even if they happen to be husbands, tell no tales, much less object!
With that somersault the Cong lost all moral authority to cage the tiger. But the idea looks to be to engage. It was Sonia’s fervent pleas that forced the law of the land to commute Nalini’s death sentence to life. It was a blatant interference with the judicial process, rather a perversion of a judicial verdict that sought to punish the enemies of the nation. This too became a saintly personal affair, as Sonia disposed of what the law had proposed. Very recently, Priyanka’s meeting with Nalini in jail was downright improper and again this too passed under the family’s divine right of passage above law. The clamour for N’s release gained momentum only after that. Given such trends, would it be wrong to expect a shift in India’s Lanka policy at the behest of the super PM? Indeed, Prabakaran has only to say sorry to Sonia by e-mail or SMS for ‘bumping off’ Rajiv, and not just pardon but even Indian paratroopers would be at his doorstep ahead of the Lankan army, for a sensationl airlift. Now, with such soft-hearted saints strutting around dispensing amnesty at random for whatever reasons, can anyone blame petty PMKs and vociferous Vaikos for holding tigers by the tail?
For the DMK, the Sri Lankan Tamil cause and even the LTTE are political bargaining chips. Commitment is subject to self-interest. No wonder, K could shelve self-respect and align with the very party that accused him of complicity in murder. But that’s a petty price. Now he has made bold to sacrifice MPs for Tamil’s sake and Tamils’ sake. That too his own daughter’s own post itself. But then how was the ultimate rationalist, under whose thumb the mighty Congress and the UPA regime lie, unaware of the military aid that the Indian Government is supposedly giving to Lanka? Obviously, the sudden rush of Tamil blood is provoked by other calculations in which SL Tamils figure least. But then with Tamils right under his nose here in TN getting the short shrift thanks to power cuts, traffic jams, inflation etc where is succour for those across seas? In any case, not all Tamils answer to names like A’Giri & K’Mozhi! But if we may suggest, why not quit as CM of Tamils’ nadu rather than exiting distant Delhi?
And as if the legitimate SL Tamil cause has not been belittled and destroyed enough, alternately by Sinhala chauvnists, the LTTE itself and the politics here, another familiar dimension unfolds: filmdom’s protest! We now know the script by heart: The SL Tamil cause will be served as speaker after hails the CM for serving the, er., SL Tamil cause! For the Cine Minister, pardon, Chief Minister, who has appointed himself as the sole arbiter of Tamil identity, that’s ratification enough of his Tamil credentials coming as it does from those who matter most to him. No matter if there are hardly any Tamils in tinseltown!

What price, secularism?
By: M.V. KAMATH

When so-called Communalism raises its head and disturbances spread as they have in Orissa, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh in recent times, one can be assured that the first to be condemned would be the Bharatiya Janata Party and, Of course, the Vishva Hindu Parishad.
At the Central Government level thought is given to the imposition of Article 355 which demands better enforcement of vigilance in the State and stricter enforcement of Law and order against rioters. No questions are asked either by the law enforcers or by our high-minded media as to what, in the first place, caused disturbances. The automatic presumption is that Hindu fundamentalists are behind the riots. The BJP is dismissed as natural advocates of Hindu chauvinism. It is in this context that one must make an inquiry into why disturbances took place in Mangalore and some orban areas in North Karnataka. Hardly anybody is aware of the existence of a religious body called ‘My Life’ and a publication called ‘Satya Darshini’ which is distributed among an innocent public. The latest issue carried an atricle that set the first spark of anger. It is a wholesale condemnation of Hinduism and its gods in the most offensive language. To quote a few examples transited from the original Kannada : ‘Urvashi, daughter of Mahavishnu, is a prostitute, Vasishta is this prostitute’s son. He married his own mother. It is this despicable man who Ram, considered by Hindus as a God, chose to be his teacher (Gurn)’.
Quote two : ‘Brahma himself is the one who kidnapped Sita. Brahma, Vishnu and shiva are sex-obsessed and it is these three who are regarded by Hindus as Gods. When such is the case, how is it possible for the triumvirate to give moksha to Hindus?’
A third quote : ‘When a golden deer appeared in front of the hutment of Ram during his vanavaas (life in the forest) and sits asked Ram to get it for her, instead of enlightening her, Ram went after the animal. Isn’t such a man stupid? How can such a man be God?’
The article quotes a stanza from Aranyakanda which quotes Ram as saying that he had committed many sins in his past life and in his current existence, he is paying for them. Says the article : ‘How can such a man be God?’
There are more such insinuations at Hindu Gods. Now there are two ways of treating such kind of various writings. One, as our secularists would recommend, is to laugh and dismiss them as the ravings of ‘Mad Man’. But in reality the sense of enlightened humor of our secularists does not come naturally to many devout Hindus who feel insulted. Their reaction, in the circumstances, is predictable. It has probably never occurred to our secular UPA government that Hindus are also human beings who could say that if hurt, they too would bleed? Some weeks ago The Hindu carried an article from its own correspondent, Praveen Wwami quoting an e-mail sent by the Indian Mujahideen, prior to the serial bombing of Ahmedabad, which said : ‘Oh Hindus, haven’t you still realised the falsehood of your 33 crore mud idols and the blasphemy of your deaf, dumb, mute and naked idols of Ram, Krishna and Hanuman are not going to save your necks, Insha Allah, from being slaughtered by our hands?’
And there is more on those lines. Hindus are expected to have another good laugh at this profanity say our secularists : ‘Why can’t we laugh at such idiosyncracies? Not all Muslims think that ways. Only such ‘Idiosyncracies’ are followed by serial bombings that kill dozens of innocent people. Protestant missionaries get away with any thing. Evangelists are protected by people in power, like George Bush in the United States. Bush is an honest man. He claims to be a born-again Christian and not a Secularist. As late as 29 January 2001 Bush apparently took a faith-based policy decision and established an office for an organisation called Project Joshua whose official mission was conversion in India. According to reports, the office was opened in the White House and was headed by a man Called Jim Howey, who is believed to have been legal counsel to Mother Teresa in the 1980s. In an article by one Bebdas Thakur in The New Indian Express (10 September), a plan was prepared for conversion ‘With military precision’ According to him, ‘all ethnographic information about India’s every nook and corner was made available in the US at the click of a mouse through Transnational Missionary Organisation (TMOs)’.
The aim was to reach out to low caste Hindus and Indian tribals. Are we to believe that Project Joshus was spending billions of dollars out of overflowing leave for scheduled caste and tribal People? Whom is it fooling? What the missionaries get away with is the excuse that they are only ‘propagating’ Christianity and not converting anyone. They point out that the Indian Constitution permits propagation, so what are they doing? We are led to think that if any tribal or dalit family adopts Christianity it is out of sheer goodwill and under no compulsion whatsoever. We are expected to believe it. And we do. The country is hung by its own petard and one can almost hear the loud laughter in the White House on the naivette of Indians and how Indians can be duped through their own laws. In any event no Hindu is expected to complain against missionaries. And the more our secularists indulge in their tomfoolery, the more upset become many Hindus who feel betrayed by their own countrymen. Worse, they have to accept the tag of communalism of the worst kind. It is to this sorry state that we have come to. India’s respect for the law is cleverly and regularly misused.
To the country’s disadvantage, missionaries sneak into India. Does anyone remember a man called Kenneth Haywood, living in an apartment in Mumbai’s suburbs whose cover was recently blown up by an extremely smart Islamic terrorist group that backed into his internet connection? Why was he given a visa to visit India in the first place? The man has since apparently returned to United States. The police found out that he had links with a radical Christian Group called Door Christian Centre which is part of the Pentecostal Christian Fellowship Ministries and which avers that ‘every believer has a personal responsibility to win souls into God’s Kingdom’, which, in plain language means one should get as many converts as possible into the Christian fold by any means possible. The tragedy is that our own laws are used to damn us, which, one supposes, serves us right. That does not matter to secularists. Like God’s children, secularists can do no wrong. Only devoted Hindus are to be downright blamed for their communalism. We live in a world of inverted logic.

A Secular Protocol
By Tarun Vijay
Patience is the key that defines facilitating others’ survival more than your own. Earth, mother we call her, symbolises that element of life. She le ts the barbarian exploit her boons and the bliss , and waits for a millennium to show she is angry.
Indian society, which believes in the values of the civilisational flow so painstakingly preserved and handed over to us, is being subjected the same kind of test of patience by the forces that represent the colors of Roman and Arab ancestry.
Like history can’t be understood through secondary or tertiary sources, original references have to be consulted, watershed incidents in a nation’s life have to be analysed through original events. Hence after Meenakshipuram, the forced exodus of Kashmiri Hindus, Godhra and Kandhmal murders, its now the turn of Bodo Hindus in Assam to face Muslim attacks.
So far 40 Hindus have been reported killed and 76,000 people have left their villages out of fear and taken refuge in 32 state government camps in Udalguri and Darrang. Twelve villages have been burnt. In Jhakuapara village the gaon budhaa (village head) was burnt alive along with his mother and sister. It all began after local Hindus resisted the forcible occupation of their lands by Muslims. The area has suddenly seen Bodo Hindus reduced to a minority and a spurt in the activities of the All Assam Minority Students Union (AMSU), SIMI, All Assam Muslim Chatra Parishad and Muslim Students Association (MUSA). Now, having burnt Hindu villages and forced them to flee, Muslims are occupying the villages vacated by Hindus.
The Assam United Democratic Front (AUDF - Badruddin Ajmal’s Muslim Political Party) MLA Rasul Haq Bahadur and AAMSU president Abdul Aziz have been demanding a separate autonomous area for the Muslims in lower Assam. The recent violence is considered as a ‘warming up’ exercise’ to chase away Hindus from their traditional hamlets.
Saw any report or interviews of the victims or front page ’shame’ editorials condemning the roasting alive of Hindus, or making them refugees in their own land? Got any call from Vatican or admonishment from Paris? Sorry, the victims happened to be Hindus so we can devote our space and time on matters more earthly like ICL cricket and red alerts in the stock exchange.
Hate sells. The more you add poison to it, the more you get elevated on the scales of leadership and fame. They say terrorism is the main issue. But do you think any one wants to fight it? All that appears on the list are a few ghastly pictures of the terror-struck common people, a few ‘good’ slogans, emotional lines of poetry and the election plank is ready. Greed, intolerance, revenge and bigotry of the secular kind have taken centrestage to constitutionalise a hate regime that thrives on disrobing India of her unique characteristics. Anything that defines that uniqueness is under assault and like a colonial dispensation; this has become a business of profit and comfort. Grants, awards and fellowships are reserved for those who yield and say yes to the secular protocol that defines India as a non-Hindu entity, using terms like ’shackled in the old’, ‘outdated’, ‘obscurantist Brahmanism’ and ‘weird ritualism which makes the practitioner rigid, backward looking’ and ‘pot-bellied, unintelligent creature with a tuft’.
The sultans of this secular protocol define an assertive Hindu as anti-women, anti-minority (read Muslims and Christians), Hindi chauvinist, having a fossilized vision that tries to revive a dead language like Sanskrit, worshipper of snakes, rats, cow, phallus, trees, who uses cow urine, cow dung for various purposes including medicine. They light fire and throw some herbs to please gods, who are elephant-shaped, and use peacocks, oxen and owls as their vehicles. They have to be civilized. And to do that they get grants from the ministry of culture.

Dr. Subramaninan Swamy exposes Karunanidhi
October 18, 2008
PRESS RELEASE
The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Mr.Karunanidhi has again published a statement on the Sri Lankan issue in the press which is deliberately misleading.
In a press release issued yesterday, Mr.Karunanidhi has said that the DMK Government in 1989, to help the children of Sri Lankan Tamil refugees in India, had allotted reserved seats in educational institutions including medical colleges for them, but that Ms.Jayalalitha succeeding as Chief Minister had got it cancelled.
This is blatantly false, as Mr.Karunanidhi must know, on two counts. The original G.O. announcing these reservations for Sri Lankan Tamil students, was issued by the Rajiv Gandhi Government in 1988 when there was President’s Rule in the State. It was discontinued by the NDA in 2000 when DMK was a partner in the Union Government and in power in the State as well. Even after I had got a favourable order from Madras High Court, the Chief Minister has failed to act to rectify it with the Centre.
Recently I had again raised the matter with the Union Government to undo the cancellation but the Minister for State for Home has written to me declining to do so.
I now challenge Mr.Karunanidhi to prove his bonafides by resigning from the CM’s post on this issue. Just by convening a meeting of anti-national parties, he cannot help the suffering Sri Lanka Tamils. Hence, his fraud and confidence trick on the public therefore needs to be exposed.

Revelations put nun’s life in danger

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A nun’s life is under threat following her revelations about the alleged abortions performed on nuns and the "limitless"’ affairs the priests were having with nuns of the Congregation of Daughters of Mary Convent, Anchal.
Following a complaint from the nephew of this nun, the State Women’s Commission member P.K.Sainaba met the nun at a mental hospital in Thodupuzha.
Her nephew has alleged that she has been forcibly admitted to the mental hospital by the Convent authorities.
The complaint makes an even more serious charge that one of the nuns of the congregation, Sister Serenna Jacob, had committed suicide unable to bear the trauma.
Now the State Women’s Commission has sought the urgent intervention of the Health and Home Ministers in the issue. In a report submitted to the Ministers, the Commission said: "If things continue like this we fear that the life of the nun is in danger." In her statement given to the Women’s Commission member, the nun said: "My hands and legs were tied up and I was forcibly given anaesthesia and then I was taken to the mental hospital. I am given 18 tablets a day now for making me mentally weak." She narrated all that had happened in the convent and told the Women’s Commission member that she was ready to repeat all that she had said in the court.
The nun pleaded that she be rescued from the clutches of the convent authorities.
The 60-year-old nun has been with this congregation for the past 43 years and she had complained to her relative over phone on August 17 that she was being mentally and physically tortured by the convent authorities.
However, according to the nun’s nephew, the very next day the nun’s relatives and her brother received a call from the convent authorities seeking permission to admit her to a psychiatric hospital. Sister Lilly Thomas Paikada, Mother-Provincial, had termed the nun as extremely abnormal.
"Her sharp criticism about the abortions carried out on some sisters and her questioning about the limitless affairs with sisters and priests made the authorities violent and was the reason behind their decision to give psychiatric treatment with the intention to make it seem that her statements were meaningless and baseless," the complaint to the Women’s Commission says.
